I took this picture in my car during a rainy day. I liked how this angle made the rain appear as if it was frozen mid-drop. When I look at this photo I see a moment frozen in time. I see the past and future blurred out in the peripherals, with the present in focus. To me, this represents not letting distractions stop you from focusing on your purpose.

TWO SHADOWS

Overall, I wanted to manipulate light to create a dynamic composition comprised solely of shadows. I also wanted to amplify the expression of the smaller figure by enlarging the silhouette of the larger object.

I took this light painting in my kitchen at 1:47 am. My goal was to make it look like time was being physically stretched out. Oftentimes we focus so much on the past or future that we forget the power of the present. This photo illustrates the fight of being present.

ANGEL FACE

I discovered this cherub while walking around the campus of a local university. There were several of them embedded on the exterior archway of a building called “Old Main” that dates back to 1968. These stone carvings are meant to cheerfully greet students as they enter Old Main. But because of time, weather and vandalism, the once angelic faces now have an out of place, eerie presence. This cherub stood out to me because of the white gum someone put on its eye and the triangular mark someone else drew on its forehead. Ultimately, when I look at this face I see tainted innocence.

THE UNDERGROUND

I found this underpass while driving through Mexican Town in Detroit. Upon first glance, the graffiti murals on the outside of it caught my eye. But then I noticed this pocket of light further inside, emanating from an opening above. The sunlight brought out the vibrancy of the sky blue wall, which stood out against the long shadows that engulfed the rest of the underpass. The scene gave me a dangerous, gritty, underworld vibe. So, I hopped the fence of the sealed off section there to capture its depth. It took several attempts because of traffic, but I think it was worth it.
